about the artist

Annie Tull uses repetition and rhythm to push the boundaries of color and line. Her sustainable site-specific installations are created from organic cotton rope and plant-based dyes. Tull’s experimental approach and sleek design sense led her to be named one of ‘20 Artists to Collect in 2020’ by London-based DESTIG Magazine. With dual background in interior architecture and fine art, she uses rope as a means of connection toward a goal of closing the gap between people and planet.

Tull grew up in rural Delaware and headed west to earn a BFA from University of San Francisco. Assisting muralist Eric Hongisto inspired her to work on a larger scale and discover ways to reinvent the canvas. Her three-dimensional paintings in space simulate brushstrokes across the room.

Spanning traditional and experimental methods of fine and textile arts such as painting, macramé and weaving as well as suspended, architecturally-integrated, or freestanding sculpture and installation, her work explores the ways humans exist both as part of the natural ecosystem and as a species set apart, ultimately seeking to bridge the gap between artificial human construction and naturally occurring habitat.

Since completing her graduate studies in Interior Architecture & Design at The George Washington University, Tull has designed corporate interiors and installed numerous commissioned works. She welcomes the opportunity to combine her fine art background with architecture and design, but aims to exhibit her installations "in the wild," in the context of public art that is accessible to all. Her objective is not to create work that is simply part of the decor, but to expand the possibilities of what art can be, and mean, to all members of the life community.

By exploring the creative potential of an ordinary household material like rope, Tull hopes to create visual experiences that are honest, intentional, and tied back to the land. She is committed to a creative practice with an earth-first ethos.
